Do I need any dance experience?
None at all! Coming from jazz, Lindy Hop is danced differently to Latin, Ballroom and Ballet anyway. If you have ever taken a Jazz, Charleston or Tap class you will notice some similarities, but many people begin with no previous experience at all. The start of the beginners’ class always features the basic steps and moves at a pace suitable for everyone so you will be able to dance on your first lesson.

What if I don’t have a partner?
During the classes partners are rotated frequently so everyone dances with everyone else. Many people come to our classes on their own, but with the friendly and relaxed atmosphere you will quickly get to know other dancers.
I’m nervous – will I be behind the rest of the class?
Don’t worry, there are new starters most weeks. Each week begins with the basic steps so that everyone can join in the class. If you aren’t sure about a move then feel free to ask during the class – the teachers are happy to answer your questions and who knows, there might be someone else wondering the same thing. If you want to find out more before you start, please come to one of the classes and have a chat with us and maybe watch some of the lesson too; we’re sure you’ll want to join in.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move easily, but not so baggy they can get tangled up. You might want to have a lightweight sweater that you can wear until you’ve warmed up. Shoe-wise, anything comfortable but without too much grip as you need to be able to move around the floor smoothly. Keds style plimsolls are particularly well suited. Heels aren’t advised! Once you’ve caught the Lindy bug you might want to consider some specialist shoes. At our social evenings many people like to wear vintage style clothes.

I don’t think I can make every single Tuesday – is that a problem?
Classes are all individual rather than a course, so if you can’t make a class just come back when you can. Each move is explained so don’t worry about forgetting moves you’ve learnt.
How do I join?
Just come along on a Tuesday evening! For your first night it’s worth arriving five to ten minutes early. There are no upfront fees and no commitment.

There is a large car park at the venue, alternatively there are nearby bus stops on Saffron Lane. Cyclists can store their bikes inside the venue.
What kind of age range is in the class?
We have dancers in their teens and upwards through 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s – everyone is welcome.
I’m scared of sequins and fake tan and don’t want to enter competitions – is Lindy Hop suitable for me?
Definitely! Lindy Hop is really relaxed dance and a million miles away from the old Come Dancing style. Lindy Hop has such a broad appeal that everyone can enjoy; even those who don’t think of themselves as dancers.
How can I improve faster?
Come to classes every week, practice your footwork at home (it is possible to triple step whilst doing the dishes!), watch videos on Youtube of the latest competitions and attend Lindy camps such as Goodnight Sweetheart and Camp Savoy.

Help – we’re getting married and need a first dance, can you help us?
Whilst you’re welcome to come along to the classes to learn, many of our instructors are able to choreograph your first dance in private lessons as well as offering 1-2-1 advice. Contact us to find out more. Lindy Hop is an elegant and easy way to wow your guests and is sure to be a first dance that everyone remembers.
